Noggarth

Matt W

Now for something completely different - bolted gritstone! Les Ainsworth, Dave Cronshaw and John Mason have put a huge amount of work at the old neglected quarry of Noggarth, cleaning dirt and vegetation from the cliff, placing bolts on the balder slabs and adding lower-offs to almost the full length of the crag so as to avoid the grotty exit that exist almost everywhere. Before this work was done the place was almost completely avoided because of the lack of protection and the harrowing grassy exits. The main trad lines have been retained, but these now also have lower-offs and can be enjoyed to the full. A small rack of wires and cams will be found useful on the trad routes and to plug the odd gap on the bolted lines.

Approach

Park by the church on Wheatley Lane Road in Nelson and follow the narrow path up the left side of the cemetery. Cross the stile in wall at the top of this and turn right, through a gate to the quarry on the left - less than 10 minutes from the car. Access it thought to be okay, sensible parking, keeping the noise down and avoiding large group use would all help keep it this way
